Washington Avenue was once the heart of St. Louis's garment and footwear trade, and the newest hotel downtown sits right in that story. Hyatt Centric Downtown St. Louis, the brand's first in Missouri, occupies an eleven-storey building from 1910 that was built as the headquarters of the Roberts, Johnson & Rand Shoe Company. Look up at the façade: it's Sullivanesque, with slender vertical columns, elaborate ornament and a few Art Nouveau flourishes.

Inside, the 142 rooms and suites lean industrial, with high ceilings, oversized windows, plenty of daylight and city views; some have a separate seating area with a sofa. The lobby restaurant and bar, The Link, takes its name from Theodore C. Link, the architect associated with the building and best known for St. Louis Union Station. Expect New American cooking with local nods such as toasted ravioli and The Hill Classic pizza, plus dishes from a wood-burning oven and wood-fired grill. There's also a Lobby Bar, a 24-hour market called Provisions, and Expedition, a rooftop bar and pool open in spring and summer.

This comes from a Hyatt press release. The hotel is pet-friendly, and the Gateway Arch, Busch Stadium and City Museum are all within reach. A good base for anyone curious about the city's industrial past; if the rooftop matters, plan a warm-weather visit.
