City Museum

An old shoe warehouse in Downtown St. Louis has been turned into an artist-built playground of caves, tunnels, slides and climbers, spread over four floors, the grounds outside and a rooftop with a Ferris wheel.

The story

City Museum is part museum, part art installation and part jungle gym, built for all ages. Inside, the main space feels like an underground cave of dark passages, colourful mosaics and hidden chambers, and slides drop through the floors. There is an indoor circus, a tree house, an art and sculpture area and a pinball hall, plus places to eat and stations serving drinks. Outdoors, tunnels lead to airplanes, cages and castle towers, and the roof holds a Ferris wheel, a giant slide and a school bus hanging over the building. Routes branch constantly, so one tunnel can land you somewhere new. The calendar runs from live music and acrobatic dog shows to Fright at the Museum around Halloween and City Nights, the 21-and-over evenings.

Good to know

TAGGG AI
  • Bring knee pads and a headlamp or flashlight for crawling through the tunnels and the darker cave areas.
  • Arrive early and plan for at least four hours, as there is far more to explore than one short visit allows.
  • Stay close to your group and children, since slides and tunnels often come out somewhere you are not standing.
