Good Times General Store, an OMA-designed shop and craft centre in Bali
Potato Head's new store at Desa Potato Head mixes Indonesian makers, live production and workshops under alang-alang thatch.
Potato Head has opened the Good Times General Store at Desa Potato Head, its creative village in Bali: a permanent shop that doubles as a craft centre. Indonesian makers and locally sourced materials are the point, and rather than simply browsing clothes, souvenirs, homeware and furniture, visitors can watch things being made or join in.
The building, designed with OMA and Potato Head's head of architecture Ade Herkarisma, borrows from Balinese construction: alang-alang thatch, rammed earth, bamboo and reclaimed wood, shaped into five linked bays that follow the journey from raw material to finished object. Look down and the terrazzo is flecked with recycled bamboo offcuts. Herkarisma says the idea is that you can trace the store itself back to where it came from.
The first bays hold Potato Head's own collections and Wasted, furniture made from discarded plastics with British designer Max Lamb. Further in, a natural dye studio uses pigments from the village's food and plant waste, with public classes in dyeing, painting and pattern-making, while another space runs moulding sessions with plastic recovered across Bali and Java. Weaving, upcycling and sewing ateliers are planned for 2027.
Pair a visit with the Waste Lab or the Follow the Waste Tour, and check the workshop timetable before you go if you'd like to make something yourself.
