Thompson Rome has opened on Via delle Botteghe Oscure, a short walk from Piazza Venezia, as the Thompson brand's first hotel in Italy. Its 69 rooms sit in a 1940s building on a street with a weighty place in post-war Italian politics, and the renovation turned up a surprise: a sculptural wall and inlaid floor by the artist Gio Pomodoro, hidden for decades and now given pride of place beside a restored marble staircase.

Art runs through the rest of the building too, with works linked to the Scuola Romana and the Scuola di Piazza del Popolo alongside contemporary names such as Guido Strazza, plus a rotating artist-in-residence programme. Rooms are meant to feel like a modern Roman flat in warm natural materials; 19 are suites, the largest with an 80-square-metre terrace, and several have balconies over the street.

LYVE Restaurant is run by Ostia-born chef Fabio Fioravanti, who spent years with the Alain Ducasse group and cooks a lighter, seafood-led Mediterranean menu drawing on bouillabaisse and rockfish broths. LYVE Rooftop does aperitivo and sharing plates above the city, and the Lobby Lounge covers coffee through to cocktails.

This comes from a Hyatt press release, so the descriptions are the hotel's own. Worth a look if you want the Forum and Pantheon on foot and an art-filled base to come back to.
