Colosseum

Officially the Flavian Amphitheatre, the Colosseum anchors the archaeological heart of Rome, a vast arena of stone arches whose scale and engineering still convey the ambition of the ancient city.

The story

The monument sits within the Parco archeologico del Colosseo, which also takes in the Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum. Inside, routes lead through its arches and across different levels, where the contrast between ruined stone and the precision of the original engineering is plain to see. Higher points open up wide views over the surrounding area. The fullest visit includes the underground area, which is part of the Full Experience ticket. A circuit of the exterior takes around half an hour, while a tour inside fills a couple of hours. Walking around the outside is free. The arena is also worth seeing at sunset and after dark, when the old amphitheatre takes on a different character.

Good to know

TAGGG AI
  • Full Experience tickets with the Underground are usually released about a month ahead; a version without it appears around seven days before.
  • Visit early in the morning, when it is less crowded and cooler; the heat inside builds quickly with the crowds on hot days.
  • A guided tour adds a lot of context, and arriving about 15 minutes before your entry slot is enough.
