Roman Forum
Temples, arches and columns more than 2,000 years old fill the Roman Forum, the open-air ruin that was once the political and social heart of ancient Rome, beside the Colosseum.
The story
This was where Romans made political decisions, staged triumphal processions and gathered to do business and socialise. Today the ground is scattered with the remains of temples, arches, columns and foundations, and walking among them means picturing the marble buildings, statues and crowds that once filled the space. Among the stops is the spot where Julius Caesar's body was burned. The Forum connects naturally with Palatine Hill and sits right beside the Colosseum, so together they make a walk through the centre of the ancient city. Higher points give views across the ruins, and the site is also striking seen from outside at sunset. An hour and a half feels rushed here; setting aside half a day gives time to explore properly and take in the scale of it.
Good to know
TAGGG AI- ✦Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a bottle, as there are refillable water fountains on site.
- ✦Midday gets very hot with little shade, so a hat, sunscreen or even a UV umbrella helps.
- ✦The entrance directly from the Colosseum is very crowded, so it is worth walking round to one of the others.
