Hotel Monteleone

A family-owned French Quarter hotel on Royal Street since 1886, with the rotating Carousel Bar, a rooftop pool and bar, and Literary Suites billed as a muse for great authors.

The story

The Monteleone has welcomed travellers since 1886 and is still family-owned. It stands on Royal Street, a quieter stretch of the French Quarter lined with antique shops and art galleries, one block from Bourbon Street. Its best-known room is the Carousel Bar, turning since 1949, a rotating bar that draws an unusual mix of people. Criollo, the hotel restaurant, brings together Gulf produce, Louisiana traditions and global influences, and its beignets and coffee are worth ordering. Up top, a rooftop pool and bar look out over the city. Rooms run from historic-style ones in the older section to the Iberville Tower and the Literary Suites, and higher floors can catch river views. Live music plays seven days a week, and dogs are welcomed with their own toys and bowls.

Good to know

TAGGG AI
  • Ask for an upgraded or higher-floor room if a view matters, since some rooms face a lower rooftop.
  • The rooftop pool gets busy, so arrive early to claim chairs.
  • Dogs are welcome with toys and bowls provided, but the nearest patch of grass is about five blocks away.
