Molly & Brie, an oak and brass brunch café in Kifisia, Athens
Shir Bargil Studio has renovated a neighbourhood café in Athens's leafy Kifisia, favouring warm materials and small details over grand gestures.
Molly & Brie is the kind of café that rests on getting the basics right. Set in Kifisia, the well-heeled northern suburb of Athens, it serves coffee, homemade sandwiches, pastries, salads, smoothies and organic juices to locals who, by We Heart's account, come in numbers. The renovation is by Athens-based Shir Bargil Studio, which skipped bold architectural moves in favour of materials, furniture and the small touches that make a room easy to linger in.
Oak sets the tone throughout, paired with brushed brass and a soft, neutral palette. Daylight picks out the grain of the wood, and rounded pendant lights hang over carefully placed seating. A slim counter with stools runs along the front window for watching the street, with timber blinds softening the light and shelves of products and everyday objects nearby. At the main counter, open shelving puts cups, bottles and coffee kit on show, so the business of making and serving becomes part of the room. Further in, upholstered corner seating and small tables offer somewhere calmer to settle.
It's a useful address for a slow breakfast or brunch if you're staying north of central Athens or exploring Kifisia, and a good reminder that a neighbourhood café doesn't need a grand concept to feel right.
