The Cape Town EDITION opens on the V&A Waterfront, the brand's first in Africa
Neri&Hu's hand-laid brick hotel at Quay 7 echoes old harbour warehouses, with a rooftop pool, a punch room and an open-air lookout.
EDITION has made its African debut on Quay 7 of Cape Town's V&A Waterfront, facing Table Mountain and the new superyacht marina. Neri&Hu worked with Cape Town architects on a long, low building with pitched roofs that nod to the warehouses once on the site, and more than six million bricks were laid by hand in shifting patterns across the façade.
The centrepiece is The Drum, a tall cylinder open to the sky, where a spiral staircase climbs to a viewing platform over the harbour, the mountain and the Atlantic. It's meant for locals as much as guests. The 142 rooms use joinery inspired by 19th-century travel trunks and rugs from KwaZulu-Natal's Shuttleworth Weaving. Southern Guild chose the art, including Zanele Muholi's portraits in the Punch Room.
Chef Phil Carmichael, formerly of Berners Tavern, runs Shale, which serves Cape produce, in-house dry-aged meat and mostly South African wine; think Saldanha Bay mussels in curry velouté. EAVE sits by the heated rooftop pool, and the Punch Room serves sharing bowls such as a brandy, Pinotage and rooibos blend. There's also a spa below sea level.
This comes from a press release. Worth a look even if you're not staying: The Drum and the rooftop are designed to be shared.
