Sydney Opera House

Over 40 shows a week fill the sail-roofed halls on Bennelong Point, from symphony seasons and musicals to circus, dance and talks, while daily guided tours reveal the building's history and architecture.

The story

The Opera House stands on Tubowgule, land of the Gadigal people, with harbour water on three sides and the Harbour Bridge close by. Over a million Swedish ceramic tiles cover the sails, bright by day and lit at night. A walk around the full perimeter shows the building from every side, and performances and exhibitions often spill onto the forecourt. Inside, several venues run at once, including the Concert Hall, where the Sydney Symphony Orchestra performs its seasons. Programming spans contemporary music, theatre, kids' shows and festivals such as All About Women. Tours run in languages from Mandarin to Spanish, with backstage, architectural and mobility access options. Bennelong, the fine-dining restaurant on the Podium level, is entered beneath the Monumental Steps, and the Stream platform carries performances online.

Good to know

TAGGG AI
  • Arrive early in the morning to walk the forecourt and harbour edge before the crowds build.
  • Return after dark, or take the ferry from Circular Quay around blue hour, to see the sails lit up.
  • Only water is allowed inside the theatres, but a glass of champagne between acts comes with a view of the bridge.
