Powerhouse Castle Hill
A Sydney Monorail carriage, Olympic opening ceremony floats and a Curiosity rover replica share space at this working storehouse, home to the Powerhouse Collection of more than half a million objects that are conserved, researched and shown here.
The story
On Dharug land in Castle Hill, this site holds the Powerhouse Collection and its archives, which date from 1880. Seven collection facilities stand here. The newest and largest, Building J, opened in 2024 with a vast presentation space, a climate-controlled store, a conservation lab, research workspaces and photography studios. Building E holds the smaller objects and Building J the large ones. The range is wide: vintage cars, restored steam locomotives, helicopters and planes, old televisions and washing machines, a Walkman and a Nokia brick, prehistoric displays and textiles. Staff lead tours through the collection and run hands-on activities such as lace making. There is a cafe, a play area for young children, and a Quiet Room with headphones for anyone with sensory needs.
