Powerhouse Parramatta

On the Parramatta riverfront, this new outpost of Australia's largest museum group brings arts, design, science and technology to Sydney's west, opening with five large-scale exhibitions and a 23-day festival.

The story

Powerhouse Parramatta sits beside the Parramatta River on Burramattagal and Dharug land, a short walk from Parramatta Park. Its striking exterior stands out along the water, especially after dark when the building lights up the riverfront. It belongs to the Powerhouse group, custodian of more than half a million objects and archives dating from 1880. The opening program brings five exhibitions, among them Task Eternal, which explores aviation, space and humanity's ambition to leave Earth, with aircraft suspended overhead. A 23-day Opening Festival fills the museum with talks, workshops, food, music and performances. The cafes and restaurants follow a single culinary vision led by Sydney restaurateur and chef Simon Sandall.
