Gashouder Westergasfabriek

A round former gasholder in the Westergasfabriek park, now a vast hall where Awakenings techno nights, ADE parties, hip-hop reunions and neoclassical piano concerts play under big lighting rigs and visuals.

The story

The circular structure has been converted from its industrial past into a hall for loud music and dancing. Its round shape spreads a crowd evenly, so a full house rarely feels jammed, and the space suits a powerful sound system, elaborate light shows, visuals and even indoor fireworks. It is the home of the Awakenings techno events and a fixture during Amsterdam Dance Event. The programme now reaches further, bringing together music, art, performance and nightlife. Recent seasons mix Dutch hip-hop reunions such as The Opposites and Buiten Westen with electronic acts like Overmono and Sven Väth, alongside quieter performances, including Canto Ostinato played on six pianos. The Unseen art fair has also used the hall, and the surrounding park offers space to walk, jog or relax before a show.

Good to know

TAGGG AI
  • Bags and coats are not allowed on the dance floor, so plan to rent one of the code-locked lockers at the entrance.
  • The music is very loud, so bring earplugs, and swap used cups and bottles for drink tokens at the bar.
  • It is an easy bike ride from the city centre, and the entrance is on the north side of the building.
