Centrale Markthal

Sixteen thousand square metres of market hall in Amsterdam, the Centrale Markthal comes alive for events, from the Cabinet vintage and design market to ice sculpture exhibitions and large art installations during ADE.

The story

The hall presents itself as a home for people who dare to be different, a place to create, run a business and innovate, and describes itself as an event venue with a raw edge. Cabinet returns regularly with more than 100 vendors of curiosa, vintage and design, and the calendar also takes in Pure Markt, a Christmas market with The Maker Market XL and the Dikke Banden Races. Art has a strong presence. For the 30th Amsterdam Dance Event, artist Boris Acket's EINDER, a moving 80-by-25-metre canvas that responds to light, sound and air, framed live concerts, while NAP+ has brought contemporary art inside. Art Below Zero filled the space with ice sculptures marking 750 years of Amsterdam, carved by more than 35 artists, from Anne Frank to the canals. The building also houses studios.

Good to know

TAGGG AI
  • The hall gets very cold in winter and very hot in summer, so dress for the season.
  • The hall is generally only open during events and is reached on foot via a pedestrian bridge, not from the north side.
  • If you are visiting the Cabinet vintage and design market, plan ahead for carrying larger furniture purchases home.
