A new Left Bank hotel with concrete, vintage finds and a piano bar

Near the Jardin du Luxembourg, Hotel LULU mixes a tougher material palette with neighbourhood-facing social spaces.

A few steps from the Jardin du Luxembourg, Hotel LULU is a new 27-room hotel that leans into the Left Bank’s artistic history without turning it into costume. Designer Vanessa Scoffier, following her work on Hotel Henriette, has given it a more architectural, masculine feel, using poured concrete, brushed stainless steel, lacquered paint and exposed wooden beams against a restrained run of white, black, grey, caramel, brown and khaki. The idea is less grand Paris fantasy, more thoughtful city address with a life beyond the guest rooms.

That shared life matters here. LULU includes a coffee shop open to the neighbourhood, a winter garden under a large glass roof and a small piano bar, set up as places where travellers and locals might cross paths. Details keep the mood from becoming severe: tables made from recycled scaffolding, recycled glass mosaics in the bathrooms, and a mix of vintage and 20th-century furniture, from a 1970s Corbi sofa by Klaus Uredat to château doors, aged mirrors, terracotta vases and antique books.

There are also playful references to the area’s past. Leopard-print carpet in the corridors nods to Montparnasse brasseries, while the hotel’s name is presented as a nickname for the Jardin du Luxembourg. If you like hotels where the public rooms have as much character as the bedrooms, this is one to note for a Left Bank stay.
