81 Funky Japanese, a kissaten-inspired café and restaurant in Kyiv
Balbek bureau designed everything from mahjong-tile tables to the menu at this all-day Japanese spot in Zoloti Vorota.
81 Funky Japanese takes its cue from the kissaten, Japan's traditional coffee shop, and settles into Kyiv's historic Zoloti Vorota district. Local studio balbek bureau did far more than the interior: it shaped the concept, brand identity, menu and even the operational plan. The thinking draws on Wakon Yōsai, the idea of pairing Japanese values with Western influences, so traditional references sit alongside contemporary touches.
The name nods to +81, Japan's international dialling code, and a telephone cord redrawn as a noodle threads through the graphics. A cheerful pufferfish character turns up on packaging and around the rooms. Look down at the tables to find inlaid mahjong tiles, and at the floor of the tea room, where a mosaic dragon takes centre stage.
Because the space is a semi-basement, the mood rests on artificial light. Custom illuminated wall panels recall bamboo stalks and shoji screens, giving a soft glow without tipping into literal theming. By day it serves breakfast and lunch; in the evening the menu moves to sushi, small sharing plates and cocktails.
Worth a look for anyone curious about how Kyiv's restaurant scene is evolving, or who simply likes a room full of small, witty details. Check the evening hours if you're after the sushi and cocktails.
