Inside Athens’s all-in-one 1OAM warehouse world
A former food warehouse in Gazi now folds together loft stays, a bakery, a shop and a penthouse above the rails.
What makes 1OAM interesting is not just that it mixes uses, but that it grew slowly from one building and one person’s way of living. Founder Eva Papadaki found the 1973 warehouse in Athens’s Gazi district in 2016 while looking for a base for her artist management company, and it has since turned into a small compound of hospitality, retail and workspaces. There are four Lofts for overnight stays, a Penthouse, a café and bakery, and 1OAM apotheke, all inside a concrete-and-glass building originally designed by Aristidis Romanos as a food storage warehouse.
The architecture sounds like the real draw. Huge warehouse windows, once used to move boxes by crane, bring in a surprising amount of light; later renovations by Gavalas Ioannidou Architecture and Studio Andrew Trotter were intended, Papadaki says, to reveal rather than decorate. Raw concrete, steel, corten, preserved terrazzo and lime plaster keep the industrial bones in view, while the Penthouse softens things with linen, herbs and that bath facing the Acropolis. The bakery adds another layer altogether: bread, cinnamon rolls, coffee and tea moving the building from showroom to lived-in place.
It is already open, and the useful thing to know is that 1OAM is not a single venue but a cluster under one roof. If you are planning a stay in Athens and like your hotels with a strong point of view, it looks worth checking which spaces are bookable now and what is happening in the building when you visit.
