Accor's MGallery Collection has opened its third Chengdu hotel, Financial City Chengdu – MGallery Collection, in the middle of the city's financial district. The news comes by way of an announcement, but the design idea behind it is a lovely one. Australian firm Stack Studio drew on the Song of Chengdu by the Tang Dynasty poet Zhang Ji, and in particular the image of stumbling into a hidden lychee grove.

That idea starts the moment you walk in: a century-old local lychee tree grows from the ground floor. Seven floors up, the Sky Garden picks up the thread as a planted rooftop where you can sit in the open air and watch the light change over the city. The 155 rooms and suites carry the theme further, with river mists, mountain fog and red sunsets as their reference points.

There is also a fitness centre with full-height windows that open onto a terrace, plus around 480 square metres of flexible event space. The sustainability measures include a plastic-reduction programme, smart energy controls in the rooms, Low-E glass curtain walls and water-saving fixtures throughout.

It will suit business travellers in the district, and anyone who likes a hotel with a story. The rooftop garden sounds like the place to start.
