Kempinski Augustine Hotel opening in a working Prague monastery
Seven buildings of the 13th-century Monastery of St Thomas in Malá Strana become a 101-room hotel, with the monks still in residence.
Kempinski is turning seven buildings of the 13th-century Augustinian Monastery of St Thomas, in Prague's Malá Strana, into a 101-room hotel, and the monks are staying put. The monastery is still active, and the hotel's guiding idea, which it calls "lived duality", leans into that: quiet and sociable, old and new, under one roof.
LDS Design Studio is leading the design, mixing Gothic, Baroque and Bohemian references with details drawn from monastic life. Many rooms, including some of the 20 suites, keep the vaulted ceilings and wooden beams of the monks' former living quarters, while tapestries and colours take their cue from the city's rooftops and gardens. The ground floor is pitched as a "living room of the city": a residential-style bar ringed with nooks, a table showing work by Czech artisans, and a ceiling made with an emerging local artist.
Gorgeous Group and Russell Sage Studio are behind the food and drink: a salon-style dining room with live music, and cocktails in twelve stages based on George Ripley's alchemical steps, alongside seasonal local drinks. Kempinski's E.R.A.s programme will introduce guests to local craftspeople and figures.
This comes from a press announcement, with opening set for early 2027 and no booking details yet. Worth noting for a future Prague trip if you like sleeping somewhere with centuries of history.
