The Webster, a new hotel brand, has made its debut in London with The Webster Covent Garden, a 167-room hotel overlooking Lincoln's Inn Fields. London studio Red Deer designed it around magical realism, the literary genre linked with Gabriel García Márquez: a grounded, ordinary setting with small moments of wonder slipped in, and a design meant to reveal itself gradually.

In the shared spaces that means bespoke furniture, terrazzo-inspired floors, art by British artists including Henry Ward and Emily Kirby, and library nooks for reading or working. The rooms, spread over ten floors and including three suites, take their terracotta, oxblood and off-white palette from literary salons and old publishing houses, with hand-knotted wool rugs, brass and alabaster lamps, radios and hand-picked books intended to tempt guests away from their screens.

Food and drink comes in three parts. Carmelina's, the Italian-inspired restaurant on the lower ground floor, has a black-and-white tiled floor; upstairs, Carmelina's Al Banco is an all-day café-bar modelled on Milan's neighbourhood bars, spilling onto a planted terrace with striped awnings. Carla's, a late-night cocktail bar for up to 60, sits on the lower level. COO Joseph Turano wants it to feel like somewhere you "discover rather than simply check into".

It's open now, with a Times Square sibling in New York planned for 2027. Worth noting for a terrace drink near the Fields, even if you're not staying.
