The Dean Munich, a 281-room design hotel, opens in Munich's Westend
Tatjana von Stein mixes Jugendstil curves with 1980s nightclub gloss at the Irish brand's largest hotel yet.
The Dean, the Irish hotel brand that opened in Berlin in February, has now arrived in Munich's Westend, the lively neighbourhood just west of the centre. With 281 rooms it is the group's largest property so far, a reworking of an existing hotel that stayed open throughout. London-based designer Tatjana von Stein, who grew up in Munich, set out to capture the city's pull between history and reinvention, pairing Jugendstil curves and natural motifs with the lacquer, gloss and theatrical lighting of 1980s nightlife.
Art matters here too. A permanent programme, The City Beneath the City, curated by Christian Ganzenberg, gives space to emerging local artists, and the sequinned works in the corridors are meant to be touched. Downstairs, Ibasho serves contemporary Japanese food from chef Alex Craciun, formerly of Kikunoi and Ryugin, among a sweeping floral carpet, pink Verner Panton chairs and stained-glass windows. Behind it hides NOREN, a hi-fi bar inspired by 1920s Japan, with a custom sound system and a lacquered DJ booth.
The bedrooms are calmer, in soft greens, with the lightest of touches. A gym, sauna, steam room and an indoor pool with a cinema screen complete the picture. One for anyone who likes a hotel that stays up late but still sleeps well.
