360 Hotel belongs to two Icelandic families who, it turns out, share the same great-great-great grandparents. Their 31-room hotel sits among farmland about 15 minutes from Selfoss and an hour from Reykjavík. Owner Hrefna Bachmann says they wanted somewhere they would want to "come home to", a calm base for day trips to the Golden Circle, the South Coast or Vík.

The interiors are by Guðbjörg Anna Árnadóttir, sister of one of the owners: timber panelling modelled on older Icelandic buildings, turf, fireplaces and Moroccan wool rugs woven to her patterns. No two rooms are alike and none has a television, though there is a cinema. Each room has a poster of Rafskinna, a mechanical "magic book" an owner's grandfather built for a Reykjavík shop window in 1932. Board games are scattered about, and the team sometimes joins in.

Hnaus, the 80-seat restaurant, is led by Hinrik Örn Lárusson, Icelandic Chef of the Year 2024, with dairy and lamb from neighbouring farms. The spa has two geothermal hot pools, saunas and a cold plunge, and staff will wake you if the Northern Lights appear.

This comes from the hotel's press release; rooms start from US$1,050 a night, with seasonal rates. Best for anyone who wants to see South Iceland without packing up every morning.
