JW Marriott has opened its first all-inclusive resort anywhere, and it chose Costa Rica's northern Pacific coast to do it. JW Marriott Costa Elena Resort & Spa sits above the secluded bay of Playa El Jobo in Guanacaste. Its story draws on the legend of Sibú from Bribri and Cabécar Indigenous traditions. The architecture, led by Phiba by DCM with local architects and artisans, begins with a handcrafted walnut oculus in the lobby, described as the "aura of Sibú".

There are 415 rooms with a villa-like feel. Some ground-floor suites open straight onto semi-private swim-out pools, and a Griffin Club works as a resort within the resort, with its own pool, beach area and lounge. Food runs across 15 venues. Leal lets guests roast their own coffee before a seven-course menu inspired by the country's provinces, Puerto Limón looks to Afro-Caribbean cooking, and LaGloria is a root beer stand recalling J. Willard Marriott's first business in 1927. There is also a 16,000-square-foot wellness area with a spa using volcanic clay and cacao.

This comes from the company's press release, so expect some polish. Rates start at $900 per person per night, based on two sharing. It suits those who want everything in one place, with a weekly night market as a way to meet local makers.
