The Romeo Collection has announced its third hotel, and the setting does a lot of the work. Romeo Massa Lubrense sits in a secluded nature reserve at Punta San Lorenzo, the stretch of coast closest to Capri, built straight onto a private natural fjord. It is a reworking of the Hotel Delfino, which dates from 1963, and the brief puts environmental restoration alongside the new design.

Kengo Kuma is the architect, and the thinking is very much his: letting the building dissolve into the landscape, and the Japanese idea of Ma, where empty space counts as a quiet presence rather than a gap. Expect warm, natural materials, including local tuff, travertine, American walnut and matte ceramics, plus plenty of glass and the soft curves he is known for. The 63 rooms and suites are planned for proper indoor-outdoor living, and the infinity pool is meant to run visually into the Gulf beyond.

Founder Alfredo Romeo talks of the coast's "slow-living spirit" and an "ultra-exclusive retreat", so pitch your expectations accordingly. This is an announcement, with the opening set for May 2027 and nothing in the piece about rates or bookings. One to note if you follow Kuma's work or are already planning a slow summer around Sorrento and Capri.
