Aman announces Amantaru, its first resort in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico
Amangiri's architect Marwan Al-Sayed draws on Puerto Rico's old forts for a coastal resort and residences.
Aman is heading to Puerto Rico for the first time with Amantaru, a resort and a small collection of branded residences. It will sit inside Esencia, a new landscape-led private community in Cabo Rojo on the island's southwest coast. The name comes from the Sanskrit for "peaceful tree", and it will be the brand's fourth Caribbean address.
The architect is Marwan Al-Sayed of Masastudio, who also designed Amangiri in Utah, so this is his second project with Aman. His starting points here are Puerto Rico's historic forts and its coastline: natural, locally sourced materials, wide open spaces and carefully framed views out to the sea and the sunset. The three- to eight-bedroom residences will follow the same architectural language.
Plans include an Aman spa and wellness centre, a beach club, racquet courts and several places to eat. Esencia itself adds two golf courses, beach, equestrian and field clubs, miles of trails and boating, plus a private airport nearby. Aman's chairman, Vlad Doronin, talks of "seclusion, serenity" and fitting sensitively into the landscape.
For now this is an announcement, with no opening date or prices given, so there is nothing to book yet. One to keep an eye on if you admired Amangiri and want to see what Al-Sayed does with a Caribbean coast.
