La Résidence Phou Vao has long been one of Luang Prabang's best-known hilltop hotels. It now reopens as part of Marriott's Luxury Collection, the group's first property in Laos and, according to the press release, its 800th in Asia Pacific outside China. It sits on Phou Vao, about two kilometres from the old town, and is described as the only hillside retreat inside the UNESCO World Heritage zone. The views take in the meeting of the Mekong and Nam Khan, the stupa of Wat Chom Si on Mount Phou Si and the spire of Wat That Luang.

The original architecture, three acres of tropical gardens and the hilltop pool have been kept, while the interiors and food have been reworked. There are 36 suites with rosewood accents, handwoven textiles and terrazzo bathtubs, some with private terraces. La Brasserie de la Résidence serves French bistro cooking built on regional produce and garden herbs, alongside a Lao tasting menu. On Saturday and Sunday mornings a local cook makes nem kao, delicate steamed rice crêpes, on the terrace.

The Mekong Spa occupies an open-air garden pavilion and uses Hmong indigo compresses and Sip Sen Lao massage. A 13-metre cliff-edge infinity pool looks out over the mountains, and trips run to the Pak Ou Caves, Kuang Si Waterfalls and Manifa Sanctuary.

This is a brand press release, so the descriptions are the hotel's own. It suits anyone who wants the temples close by and a quieter hill to come back to.
