Pak Ouv Caves

Over 4,000 Buddha figures fill two limestone caves in the cliffs where the Nam Ou meets the Mekong, about 25 km north of Luang Prabang, usually reached by boat upriver.

The story

The lower cave, Tham Ting, is a shallow open-air grotto with a lookout over the river. Its ledges are crowded with miniature wooden, metal and clay Buddhas in meditating, peaceful and reclining poses. Locals have left them here as tribute over centuries, and legend holds that every boat on the Mekong should stop to pay respect for a safe journey. High-water marks from past flood years are written on the cave walls. Around 200 steps lead up to Tham Theung, the upper cave, which runs roughly 50 metres into the mountain in complete darkness. A torch reveals a large maroon stupa, a gold-plated seated Buddha and many more figures tucked deep inside. The usual approach is a boat trip of about two hours upstream from Luang Prabang, past mountain scenery and water buffalo on the banks.

Good to know

TAGGG AI
  • Bring a torch for the pitch-black upper cave, and pack insect repellent as well.
  • The upper cave involves a climb of steep steps, with rest stops and toilets about halfway up.
  • Buy your entry ticket at the official counter yourself rather than through the riverside shacks offering to get it for you.
