Grand Hyatt The Red Sea opens on Saudi Arabia's Shura Island
A 430-key resort with reef-inspired canopies made from recycled fishing nets, five pools and nine restaurants, two of them open now.
Shura Island sits within Saudi Arabia's Red Sea coastal development, and its masterplan by Foster + Partners is called Coral Bloom. Grand Hyatt The Red Sea, which Hyatt announced in a press release, takes that idea literally. Its signature canopies, made from recycled fishing nets, borrow their shapes from reef forms and light on the water, and give shade to the outdoor spaces between buildings.
Inside, Muza Lab designed the 430 rooms, suites and villas in calm, warm tones with layered textures meant to echo the tides. Every room has a balcony or terrace facing the sea, lagoon or gardens, and some villas have their own pools. There are five pools in all, a 750-square-metre spa with 12 treatment rooms, and a large ballroom pitched at weddings and conferences.
Of the nine planned restaurants, only two are running so far: Embers, cooking meat and seafood over live fire, and Drift Pool Bar for drinks and light plates by the water. The rest, including Akira Back Korean BBQ and a dessert bar from pastry chef Janice Wong, are due later, with no dates given.
Worth knowing if you're planning a Red Sea trip; check which restaurants have opened before you go.
