Terreno Barrio Hotel by OHLAB opens in Palma's El Terreno neighbourhood
A 41-room Palma hotel pairs a restored 1935 apartment block with a new cork and timber building wrapped around a public plaza.
Mallorcan studio OHLAB wanted this Palma hotel to act first as an extension of El Terreno, the neighbourhood on the city's west side, and only second as somewhere tourists sleep. Founders Paloma Hernaiz and Jaime Oliver insist that idea is "not a slogan" but the thing that shapes the whole plan.
The 41 rooms are split across two buildings. A five-storey 1935 apartment block by local architect Francesc Casas, nicknamed "the stage", holds reception, a restaurant and bar, a club and a roof bar, with patterned tiles, heavy curtains, a golden mirror bar and a wool curtain installation by Sylvia Sanchez Montoya. Its bedrooms are colour-blocked top and bottom, with terrazzo made by local firm Huguet from the project's own demolition waste.
Next door, a seven-storey cross-laminated timber block, "the bazaar", is clad in cork on one side and wraps a new plaza. It holds a café, coworking, a bookshop and gallery, pop-up shops, a gym, spa and cinema, done in browns and lime green. Its bedrooms have murals by Albert Pinya and mirrored bathroom boxes.
El Terreno is also home to Camper's Project Gomila and its Can Pa bakery, so it's worth pairing the two if you're curious about the neighbourhood's revival.
