Macchina, a car gallery and specialty coffee café in Wan Chai, Hong Kong
Studio Ruei sets a single rotating car among concrete, brushed metal and timber in a gallery café on Gloucester Road.
Macchina, on Gloucester Road in Hong Kong's Wan Chai, is part car gallery, part coffee bar. Designed by Yuisze Wong of Studio Ruei, it treats vehicles as cultural and industrial objects rather than things to sell, and deliberately steers away from the usual showroom look.
From the street, the frontage is restrained, but large windows look straight into the main bay, where one car sits on a plinth like a sculpture. The first was an Aston Martin Valkyrie. The cars rotate, so the story on show changes without anyone touching the architecture. Sightlines run from the plinth to lounge seating, display cases and the espresso bar.
The palette draws on Brutalism: textured concrete, brushed metal and timber, with crisp reveals meant to echo the fine tolerances of car manufacturing. Overhead, a ceiling grid mixes soft washes with spotlights to pick out the curves of the bodywork, while acoustic panels keep the noise down. Low lounge seats let you study a car's profile from different heights, shelves hold books, scale models and design objects, and the service counter is kept plain so it doesn't compete.
The space is about 2,150 sq ft. This is the studio's own account, sent in through designboom's reader submissions. It's a natural stop for anyone who likes cars as much as coffee, and worth checking which car is in before you go.
