Fairmont New Orleans opens in the former Bank of New Orleans tower
Fairmont returns to New Orleans after twenty years with a 250-room hotel inside a 1970 Skidmore, Owings & Merrill landmark.
Fairmont has come back to New Orleans after two decades away, and the new hotel, the brand's 100th, has taken over 17 storeys of the former Bank of New Orleans building. That's a 31-storey Skidmore, Owings & Merrill tower from 1970 in the Central Business District, a walk from the French Quarter and the Caesars Superdome.
The best part is what was kept. The sidewalks, entry canopy, lobby floors and concrete walls on the lower two floors have been preserved, along with bronze panelling and a local cypress ceiling on the second floor. Rockwell Group did the interiors, drawing on the influences that shaped the city, with the 1970s oil-boom era running throughout. There are 250 rooms and suites, and a Fairmont Gold lounge overlooking the Mississippi is due in December.
Emeril Lagasse runs the food. His Delmonico Steakhouse makes its New Orleans debut here, its first outside Las Vegas, and The Café by Emeril serves French-leaning breakfasts and lunches with Creole and Southern touches. The rooftop pool and Bleu Perdu bar, the Third Measure cocktail bar and a 10,000-square-foot spa are all set for early December.
This comes from a brand announcement, so check what's open before booking. Fans of mid-century towers will want to see that cypress ceiling.
