Anamnisis, a Greek pastry shop in an 18th-century Mykonos Town house
The team behind Soulmates opens a traditional sweets shop around a communal table, designed by Studio Kisko in an old Mykonian house.
Anamnisis means remembrance, and this new pastry shop in Mykonos Town takes the word to heart. It comes from the people behind the brunch spot Soulmates and sits on the ground floor of a traditional 18th-century Mykonian house. Architect Fragkiskos Sarris of Studio Kisko looked to the island's old bakeries, where baking, eating and catching up with neighbours all happened in the same place.
Traces of the building's earlier lives turned up during the renovation and were kept, so the history shows through. The heart of the room is a communal dining table, a familiar piece of Greek home life, where you can watch sweets being made and then sit down to eat them. Even the handwashing arrangement nods to the customs of a Greek host. The palette is pure Cyclades: pale knotted timber, earthy tones, blue and white, with hand-finished surfaces. Murals by Christina Mandilari of Naked Summers Studio bring in the island's landscape, water and mythology through a folk-art lens, without tipping into period pastiche.
On the counter are the classics: galaktoboureko with crisp phyllo, baklava made with Aegina pistachios, and kaimaki soft serve for hot days. A good stop for anyone in Mykonos who would rather sit with locals over syrupy pastry than queue for another beach club.
