Avocado House began with a simple idea: three circles. Architect Arshia Mahmoodi of Arshia Architects used one for the core of the house, one for the yard and a third to link them, then cut pieces away to make a crescent-shaped courtyard and to frame views across Yucca Valley to the San Jacinto Mountains. Somewhere along the way the plan started to look like an avocado, with the rounded core as the pit, and the name stuck.

Rather than tucking the outdoor space behind the house, the building curls around it. The courtyard holds a pool, spa and fire pit, and the main living room and two of the three bedrooms open straight onto it. Owner Zhang Zhuo describes it as a deliberately "quiet, intimate" pocket within a vast hilltop. Curved glulam timber forms the sweeping canopy and roof, which the team found hard to build but which gives the house its character. Inside, Xinlei Li of Xinlei Architecture designed the curved rooms, with Flos lighting, commissioned furniture and art, and a lofted lounge with a pool table above the living area.

Solar panels and dry wells for roof runoff complete the picture. The house is part of Fieldtrip's Signature Homes, the same company behind Joshua Tree's Invisible House, so it is one to book rather than just admire. Good for a small group after desert sunsets.
