Space Popular's quilted window installation at Hermès Maison on New Bond Street, London
Six arched windows on New Bond Street become a soft, surreal Georgian drawing room stitched from nearly 500 quilted pieces.
Hermès has a long habit of treating its shop windows as an art form, and this autumn the London Maison has handed its six arched windows to architects Lara Lesmes and Fredrik Hellberg of Space Popular. Their installation, 'Ciel de Lit', imagines a drawing room made entirely of quilts in warm, toasty colours, drawing on the Georgian architecture of the building and on that drifting moment between sleeping and waking.
Look closely and the jokes appear: quilted sash windows rising towards quilted clouds, a fireplace mid-roar, a door left slightly ajar, gloves that pull back the curtains and a leather belt plugged into a stitched socket. Real pieces from the Home collection sit among the fabric, including the 1983 Pippa stool, a Jean-Michel Frank sofa re-edition and the Pantographe arc floor lamp.
It is the duo's first go at quilting, made with London crafts specialist Andy Knight and a group of artisans who joined almost 500 pieces together. Hellberg marvels that the stitching 'doesn't miss a millimetre'.
It is free to see from the pavement at 166 New Bond Street, and the reflections of passing black cabs become part of the scene. Worth a detour before it closes on 30 October.
