Residenza del Cardinale, Meliá's first Milan hotel, in a 13th-century palace
A restored medieval palace near the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, with a small courtyard restaurant cooking Piedmontese classics.
Meliá Hotels International has opened its first Milan property, Residenza del Cardinale, under The Meliá Collection banner. It occupies a 13th-century palace a short walk from the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, and has been restored by Progetto CMR and Studio Simonetti, who kept the building's historic fabric while making it more energy efficient and adding modern comforts.
The heart of the place is Nocciola Restaurant & Bar, a small room for 40 that looks onto a courtyard terrace with space for 16 more. The kitchen looks west to Piedmont rather than to Lombardy, working with the region's best-known produce, truffles, Fassona beef and Barolo, in classics such as veal with tuna sauce and bagna càuda. Lunch is pitched at the pace of a Milan working day; in the evening the mood shifts to fine-dining menus.
In the bar, close-up photographs of leaves and flowers by the German photographer Karl Blossfeldt hang against soft orange walls, their precise, almost architectural forms echoing the geometry of the building itself.
The piece reads like an opening announcement and gives no room count or prices, so check those directly. Worth noting for anyone who fancies pairing an afternoon at the Ambrosiana with a long Piedmontese lunch.
