Madam Chow is a new Asian restaurant at The Oberoi Gurgaon, and Studio Lotus has shaped it around the old idea of yin and yang. It sits in a glass pavilion looking over the hotel's reflective pool, and the seating, including raised platforms at the far end, is arranged so every table gets a clear view of the water. Because the kitchen draws on cooking from across Southeast Asia, principal Asha Sairam explains, the brief was for a space that suggests an Asian philosophy without settling on any single national identity.

The contrasts are easy to spot. The bright front of the room has handmade white ceramic tiles, made with Aura Pottery, hung on steel cables along the top of the glass box and running down behind the bar, where they double as shading and scatter moving shadows through the day. Further in, the mood darkens with patterned black stone walls, parquet floors and artworks in metal, paper and textile.

The detail Sairam is proudest of is the private dining room's screen: embroidered, translucent fabric panels by CraftCanvas and Kapaas, set inside 4.2-metre glass and showing fish, water, cranes and sky. It is a design interview rather than a review, so check menus and booking with the hotel, but it sounds worth a look for anyone staying nearby who likes a well-made room.
