Casa Verbena, a 45-room hotel by Lorenzo Castillo, opens in Madrid
Hilton's Outset Collection makes its European debut on Calle de Preciados, with costumbrismo art, rooftop terraces and churros at breakfast.
Casa Verbena Madrid takes its name from the verbena, the lively neighbourhood party of food, music and shared tradition. It also borrows from costumbrismo, the Spanish artistic habit of painting everyday customs and characters. The idea is to look past the capital's landmarks towards the cafés, streets and squares where Madrileños actually live. It is a small place, 45 rooms on Calle de Preciados in the centre, and the first European hotel in Hilton's Outset Collection, a group of independent hotels that keep their own identity.
Madrid-born designer Lorenzo Castillo did the interiors: costumbrismo-inspired artwork, fluted glass, brass, warm materials and layered textures. Many rooms face the classic façades of Preciados, while the Preciados Rooms open onto terraces looking across the rooftops towards the Royal Palace. Breakfast is served in an emerald dining room and leans local, with churros in honour of the city's old churrerías, pan con tomate with Iberian ham, Spanish tortilla and locally roasted coffee.
A local artist has drawn a seasonal illustrated guide, Our Madrid, with cafés, shops and bars the team would recommend to friends. This comes from a Hilton press release, and Hilton Honors points can be earned and spent here. A good fit for anyone who wants a small, central base with a sense of the city's daily rhythm.
