Seven red buildings, from a Swedish fire station to a Houston school
A Dezeen roundup gathers seven recent projects in red, from a timber fire station in Sweden to a cabin in Ireland.
Dezeen has gathered seven recent buildings that lean hard on one colour, and the spread is broad: civic, commercial, domestic and academic. In Liden, Sweden, Kod Arkitekter stained the timber cladding of a fire station bright red to make it a local landmark. It is partly sunk into its site, which was chosen for being close to a highway. In Jihlava, Czech Republic, Chybík + Krištof wrapped a 5,650-seat ice hockey arena in zigzagging red aluminium, a nod to the home team's colours.
The one you could actually stay in is Cucu, an off-grid cabin in rural Westmeath, Ireland, by New York practice Studio Bucky for the rental brand Samsú. Its red-stained shingles, tapered form and irregular openings aim, in the studio's words, for a "sense of personality and wonder".
Elsewhere, Aranchii Architects clad a three-building logistics hub near Lviv, Ukraine, in red metal under curved gable roofs, and Karamuk Kuo added a terracotta and glass extension with a sawtooth roof to the Rice School of Architecture in Houston. Two family homes, a barn-like house in Riga by Gaiss and a red corrugated-metal addition to a former pigsty in the Czech Republic by Facha Architekti, round it out; both are private.
A good browse for anyone who likes colour used with conviction; the Irish cabin is the one to bookmark.
