The Museum of Modern Art

Van Gogh's The Starry Night, Monet's vast Water Lilies and Picasso's Les Demoiselles d'Avignon anchor this Midtown museum, whose six floors span painting, sculpture, photography, design and film.

The story

A chronological route begins on the fifth floor, where frames from Méliès' A Trip to the Moon lead on to Van Gogh, a room devoted to Picasso, an early Mondrian that puts his later grids in context, and Dalí. Elsewhere are geometric abstraction galleries, work by Frida Kahlo, pop art's Campbell's Soup and a Marcel Duchamp installation. Iconic pieces hang alongside lesser-known and newer local artists. The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden offers an outdoor break with chairs, sometimes with music playing. Food ranges from the rooftop Terrace Café to The Modern next door, a two-Michelin-starred restaurant overlooking the garden. An audio guide is available through the website, and the shop is strongest on homeware and fabrics.

  • Book tickets online ahead of time to skip the main entry lines, especially on free resident Fridays.
  • Arrive early on a weekday for quieter galleries, though The Starry Night draws crowds even at opening.
  • Allow at least two hours and wear comfortable shoes; a day ticket permits re-entry for café breaks.
