David Zwirner

Free to enter and set in large, airy rooms in Chelsea, David Zwirner's gallery stages major contemporary shows, most famously Yayoi Kusama's crowd-drawing exhibitions of polka dots and mirrored infinity rooms.

The story

This is one of several David Zwirner spaces in New York, part of a gallery that also runs locations in Los Angeles, London, Paris and Hong Kong. The Chelsea rooms are open, minimal and well lit, big enough for giant flowers, tentacles and immersive installations. The programme mixes established names with emerging artists across painting, sculpture, spaces and sound. Kusama is the gallery's best-known collaborator, and her shows here have filled rooms with polka dots, flower and yellow mountain sculptures and mirrored infinity rooms. Other exhibitions have featured Michael Armitage, Stan Douglas, the British painter Rose Wiley, Noah Davis's images of family life and landscape, and a Doug Wheeler room flooded with soft light. A Yoshitomo Nara show spans the 19th and 20th Street galleries.

Good to know

TAGGG AI
  • For a Kusama infinity room, arrive about 30 minutes before opening, as queues can stretch outside for an hour or more.
  • If you skip the infinity room queue, you can usually walk straight in to see the paintings and sculptures.
  • Zwirner runs more than one New York space, so check which gallery is hosting the show you want to see.
