George Washington Bridge Bus Station

This Port Authority bus hub by the George Washington Bridge links buses from New Jersey with the A train, and it is easier to find your way around than the Midtown terminal.

The story

The bus station first opened in 1963 with an open waiting area lined with shops, ticket booths and seats where travellers watched for their bus. A long renovation, finished in 2010 after many delays, reshaped the building. Passengers now board directly from the upstairs garage, and the station is run by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Its main draw is the connection. The A train stops right here at 175 St, making the station a natural transfer point between New Jersey and the rest of the city. NJ Transit's 186 bus heads out to Englewood, and the information booth has served as the meeting point for the Shorewalkers' New Year's Day hike along the Harlem River to Inwood Hill and Highbridge Parks.
