St Johns Beacon
A lift climbs in seconds to the viewing gallery of this Liverpool tower, where windows on every side take in the city, its port and, on clear days, the Welsh mountains and Blackpool.
The story
St Johns Beacon is a Liverpool tower with a viewing gallery that gives a full panorama of the city. Windows run around the perimeter, looking over the port and the major landmarks. On a really clear day, the view stretches well beyond the city to the Welsh mountains and Blackpool. The visit is self-guided. Plaques and information boards placed around the gallery identify the well-known sights in each direction, and staff are on hand to help. There is no set time limit at the top. You can stay as long as you like, then let the staff know when you want the lift back down. Walking the loop a couple of times can help anyone uneasy with the height.
