Royal Albert Dock Liverpool
Museums, galleries, waterfront dining and Mersey views come together at the most-visited free tourist destination in North West England, home to the Maritime Museum, International Slavery Museum and The Beatles Story.
The story
The cultural line-up here is dense. Alongside the Maritime Museum and the International Slavery Museum sits The Beatles Story, which holds the world's largest permanent exhibition dedicated to the Fab Four. Tate Liverpool belongs to the dock too, though it has temporarily moved while its dockside gallery is transformed. A Victorian carousel, Splash Tours, the Magical Mystery Tour and pop-up markets add to the mix. Food ranges from Turkish and Greek street food, Catalonian and Thai cooking to Neapolitan pizza, fish and chips, steakhouses and pubs, with several dog-friendly venues. The setting does much of the work: ferries crossing the Mersey, sunsets and shifting tides, and light displays after dark, especially during the River of Light festival. The Three Graces and the Museum of Liverpool lie a short walk north along the river.
Good to know
TAGGG AI- ✦Plan to come back after dark, when light displays illuminate the dock and the atmosphere shifts from daytime sightseeing.
- ✦Stay for sunset to watch the light fade over the water while ferries cross the Mersey.
- ✦Allow a few hours to wander the shops, museums and waterside bars rather than treating it as a quick stop.
