Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum

Frank Lloyd Wright's spiral museum, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where a continuous ramp winds around a skylit rotunda past modern and contemporary art from Kandinsky to Picasso.

The story

The building is as much the draw as the art. Frank Lloyd Wright designed a continuous spiral ramp that wraps around an open white rotunda, lit from above by a glass skylight, so the galleries unfold one after another rather than room by room. Special exhibitions fill the ramp, and their themes change from show to show. The collection runs to nearly 2,000 modern and contemporary works by artists from around the globe. Standing displays include Kandinsky, Picasso and Van Gogh, along with early Impressionists hung close enough to compare their styles side by side. This is the New York museum of a foundation that also includes the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, the Peggy Guggenheim Museum and the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi. Families will find a kids' craft room, and Central Park is an easy stroll afterwards.

Good to know

TAGGG AI
  • Take the elevator to the top floor and walk down the spiral ramp to see the exhibitions in one continuous flow.
  • Check what the main exhibition is before you go, since the rotating show on the ramp shapes much of the visit.
  • The museum is fully wheelchair accessible, with restrooms and water stations on every floor.
