Casa Celeiro, a timber barn-roofed waterfront house in Delfinópolis, Brazil
MF+Arquitetos split a reservoir-side home into a pitched timber 'barn' of bedrooms and a planted, half-sunken pavilion below.
On the shore of a large reservoir in Minas Gerais, Filipi and Mariana Oliveira of MF+Arquitetos have built Casa Celeiro, or Barn House, a sprawling home of around 1,108 square metres arranged as two forms set at right angles to each other. The name comes from the upper volume: a long, single-storey pitched roof of glue-laminated timber frames that runs north to south and overhangs on every side to make shaded verandas.
Those verandas double as corridors, with glazed and louvred panels that swing open, and lead to a steel-clad core of five en-suite bedrooms. The main suite at the northern end has two walls of sliding glass. Only the central living room rises to the full height of the roof, and from here a grand staircase heads down towards the water.
The lower level is half sunk into the hillside, its flat concrete roof planted so it all but vanishes from the reservoir. Here sit the main kitchen and living room, three sliding glass walls opening to a pool terrace, plus a sauna and a cool wine cellar. A cascade of rough-hewn stone steps through mature planting also links the two levels, a route the architects describe as a gradual move between building and nature.
This is a private house, so one to admire in pictures, especially if you like timber, glass and generous verandas.
