Zaha Hadid's Belgravia mews house in London goes on sale
One of only two private houses her studio completed, squeezed behind a six-metre brick-and-glass façade near Hyde Park Corner.
Ten years after Zaha Hadid's death, one of the rarest things her studio made has come up for sale. 6 Grosvenor Crescent Mews in Belgravia, built from 2014, is one of just two private houses the practice completed; the other is the Capital Hill Residence outside Moscow. Wallpaper*'s Jonathan Bell tells the story of how it was won from a tight, heavily protected site.
The plot touches nine neighbours, so the only face the house shows the street is six metres wide: a rippling screen of back-lit brick lattice and patterned glass. Behind it are four floors of roughly 1,000 sq ft each. A polished concrete staircase winds between them, and a two-storey atrium draws light down from a glass roof to a basement kitchen, where a polished counter juts from the wall like a piece of rock. Windows, courtyards and walls are arranged so that no neighbour can look in.
Upstairs, the principal bedroom has curved glass and the only access to a planted terrace, and two more en-suite bedrooms wrap around a central dressing room. Even the garage, a planning requirement, is finished well enough to work as a study.
It's a private home on sale at £11.95m through Forbes Gilbert-Green, so this one is for reading rather than visiting, and for anyone curious how Hadid's curves cope with a London mews.
