Mutuo's Wonderland house in Laurel Canyon, Los Angeles, goes on sale
One of three linked homes made from a single hillside house, mixing scalloped shingles, board-formed concrete and a rooftop deck.
Wonderland began as one single-family house on the Laurel Canyon hillside. In 2019 the Los Angeles practice Mutuo finished turning it into three interconnected homes that share outdoor green space, trying to balance privacy with a sense of living alongside neighbours. The project won a 2021 AIA California Residential Merit Award. Mutuo took its cue from the canyon's historic row houses and redrew them in a contemporary way, so Victorian scalloped shingles sit against board-formed concrete.
The home now for sale has two bedrooms over three levels. The main suite, with a walk-through closet and its own bathroom, is on the entry level, along with a guest bedroom with a bathroom and a laundry area. The detail you'd notice first is the underside of the staircase, carved into the living-room ceiling. A skylight scatters light down the open-tread stairs, which climb to the dining area, open kitchen and terrace. Zoning rules pushed the outdoor space forwards and upwards, giving a front terrace and a rooftop deck facing the San Gabriel Mountains.
It is on the market for $1,495,000, with enquiries through the Modern California House website. Wallpaper* says it feels almost plucked from the 1950s. As a private home there is nothing to visit, but it is a good read on making three homes out of one.
