Craig Ellwood, born Jon Nelson Burke in Texas, never formally qualified as an architect, yet his name is attached to some of California's best-known mid-century houses, among them Case Study House #22, the Stahl House. Plenty of his work survives, including the 1976 ArtCenter College of Design campus in Pasadena, though the Ellwood-Zimmerman House in Brentwood was demolished in 2024. Now the Kubly House, believed to be his only residential project in Pasadena, is on the market.

It was completed in 1965 for $45,000, for Don and Sally Kubly, both ArtCenter alumni and teachers. Don later became the college's second president, and the commission sparked the partnership that brought Ellwood to the campus a decade on. The house is a Miesian glass and timber box, reportedly first sketched on a napkin over lunch, raised on short pilotis. A galley kitchen sits at its heart, with living and dining rooms either side and bedrooms tucked into the corners. Steps and terraces lead down to a 0.6-acre garden and pool, with mature trees framing the view from every room.

The Kublys kept it until 2022, and the next owners restored the structure, surfaces and glazing and updated the systems. It has three bedrooms, two bathrooms and 2,277 sq ft, and is listed with Suarez + Benz at Compass for $3,250,000. A private home, so it's one for Ellwood devotees with the means; everyone else can enjoy the photographs.
