The Lovell Beach House began with an unusual client. Philip Lovell wrote a health column for the Los Angeles Times and championed naturopathy, vegetarianism, sunbathing and avocados. His wife Leah shared his enthusiasms, and the couple asked RM Schindler, a Vienna-born architect who had worked with Frank Lloyd Wright, for a home built around fresh air and light. Richard Neutra did the landscaping. It was finished in 1926.

Schindler raised the house on five concrete pillars, still a novel move for a private home, which opens up the ocean views and lets ribbons of glazing light the double-height living room. Four identical bedrooms sit off a galleried landing, with a roof deck above. The sleeping porches were meant to open to the Pacific air, but chilly fogs meant they were enclosed by the end of the decade. Neutra's modest garden has a curving raised flower bed, on the last plot before the beach.

The house has stayed with the Lovells ever since, and almost all of Schindler's built-in furniture survives. Following the death of the last family member to live there in 2025, it is now listed at $18.8m. This is a private home and a sale, not a visit, but Wright's Hollyhock House, mentioned along the way, is open to the public.
