Barcelona architects Anna and Eugeni Bach have reworked a village house from the turn of the century in Fonolleres, a small, well-to-do village near Girona. Rather than start again, they added a run of geometric extensions and insertions that keep to the village's sober character while making the 350 sq m house work better for its owners. Working with Roger Molas and Nuria Gómez, they aimed for something that looks as though it grew over time, like its neighbours.

The biggest change is on the south-facing garden side: a full-width extension and covered veranda with a broad terrace above, where five circular canopies stand. A round pergola, which will be planted, should eventually screen the breakfast table from morning sun, the barbecue is shaded at midday, and the shallow end of the pool slips under the veranda. Much of it follows one idea, widening the range of shade and shelter so the house is liveable all year.

The detail to notice is a triangular notch cut into the plan, creating what the architects call a 'studiolo', a small reading nook behind the bedhead beside a two-storey bookcase. Plaster, timber and ceramic keep the palette warm and earthy.

This is a private home, so it's one for admiring in pictures, especially if you like additions that sit quietly in an old village.
